Painting and walls

A room to freshen up, a wall to put right, holes to make disappear before the outgoing inspection.

Preparation tools before painting

The result is decided before the roller

Paint hides nothing on a wall: it reveals. A badly filled plug hole, a board joint that has moved, an old chair mark left unsanded all show up more clearly the more satin the finish. That is why preparation takes most of the time — filling, drying, sanding, dusting off, then a primer wherever the surface demands one.

Then comes the painting itself: walls and ceilings, in one or two coats depending on the starting shade and the colour you want. Going from a dark wall to a matt white nearly always needs an extra coat, and it is better to plan it into the quotation than discover it at the end of the day. Localised touch-ups — one wall, a hallway, a door surround — are possible too, bearing in mind that an aged shade never blends perfectly.

The family also covers coverings and finishes: hanging wallpaper or paintable glass-fibre lining, skirting boards and beading, and renewing the silicone joints in kitchens and bathrooms — the ones that go black and that no product recovers once mould is inside the sealant. A joint is replaced, not cleaned.

FAQ

Painting: the details

Do you supply the paint?

Both arrangements exist. You buy the shade you have chosen yourself — often the case when the colour was settled long ago — or I supply a mainstream brand, invoiced at cost. Either way, the quotation separates labour from materials clearly.

How long does repainting a bedroom take?

A twelve square metre bedroom with sound walls usually takes a day: preparation in the morning, two coats after that with drying time in between. If the walls are damaged or the ceiling is included, allow a second day, mostly because filler has to dry.

Can bathroom joints be redone on their own?

That is a service in its own right, ordered without any painting. The old sealant is cut out completely, the surface is degreased and dried, then the new bead is applied and smoothed. The shower then has to be left alone for twenty-four hours: it is the only constraint, but it is not negotiable.

Which room, which colour?

Floor area, ceiling height, current colour and target colour: with that, the estimate is already reliable.
